Biography
Chris is a London based Composer, Song Writer, Orchestrator and Film Maker originally from Newcastle upon Tyne. His love of music began at the age of 8 with Violin lessons, eventually playing in a youth string Orchestra, performing at the Sage Gateshead. Moving away from the Violin at the age of 11, Chris found a new love in Piano which he still plays today, excelling in his sight-reading skills. An interest in creating his own music evolved from his participation in theatre productions and his continued growth as a pianist led him to begin his journey in composition, with his compositions being key highlights of his music GCSE and A-Level qualifications, as well as helping him achieve a Gold Arts Award.
In 2022, Chris graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance’s Composition course, run by Dominic Murcott, having been taught throughout his studies by composers Amir Konjani, Laura Jurd, Gwyn Pritchard and Matt Roberts.
Chris has been involved in a variety of exciting projects. He has enjoyed creating a huge array of work in collaborative environments both during his time at Trinity Laban and since completing his studies.
During his time at Trinity Laban, Chris would write music for a variety of ensembles from 35 piece orchestra in the New Music Recording Sessions, to smaller chamber ensembles of 7-10 players for the likes of the Apollo Consort Contemporary Music Society. He recently had a work played by the Royal Northern Sinfonia.
Competitions and music festivals were also the home of new works by Chris. He composed a piece for Trinity Laban’s Runswick competition that included a Theremin solo for Theremin player Lydia Kavina. For Trinity Laban’s Rude Health music festivals, Chris wrote music for a rock band as well as a ghost story play with a contemporary twist on live music to accompany it.
As well as composing music, Chris also enjoyed arranging music from Opera and Musical Theatre for Puzzle Piece Opera, with the music performed to live audiences.
Projects
Chris also enjoyed running theatrical projects during his time at Trinity Laban, collaborating with music, dance and musical theatre students to create new unique works. The most notable of these was the ‘Devise a sci-fi radio play’ project in which students collaborated together to create science fiction audio dramas and their vast soundscapes with just their voices and objects in their own homes.
Since leaving Trinity Laban, Chris has been taking on commissions including writing music for a promotional film and solo repertoire for instrumentalists. Most recently he has been working on his first short film that he has also scored the music for.
Whilst enjoying exploration within all music genres, Chris specialises in music for film and theatrical backgrounds. A love for melodic tunes are key to his composition and song writing style whilst at times also trying to find new angles to explore theatricality.
